The Indian Union Government releases an annual report on higher education each year, and in this context, the 2019-20 report is just out. When we look at the statistics, it becomes apparent that SC/ST and Muslims being appointed to teaching positions in higher education remain extremely low. The VCK strongly condemns this discriminatory attitude. As per the 2014-15 report of the 14,73,255 faculty positions in India, SCs had 7.1% representation, STs had 2.1% representation and Muslims had 3.2% representation. The present report shows that of the all-India figure of 15,03,156 faculty members, SCs have 9% representation, STs have 2.4% representation and Muslims have 5.6% representation. As per the 2011 census, the population of SCs in India is 16.6%, STs is 8.6% and Muslims is 14.2%. On a national level, SCs are given 15% reservation, STs are given a 7.5% reservation. When we look at the statistics from the present annual report, it becomes clear that the Constitutionally mandated for SC, STs has been massively ignored in higher education. This is an enormous injustice inflicted on SC/STs. Likewise, Muslims who constitute 14.2% of the population are not even represented in half that proportion. This annual report is further evidence that the BJP Government at the Centre does not care about the rights of SCs, STs and Muslims. To put an end to this injustice, we demand the Narendra Modi-led Union BJP Government to carry out a Special Recruitment Drive for SC/ST and Muslims to ensure that they are represented in higher education appropriately.
